Anxiety can affect people in very different ways. For some, it feels like a constant background tension or overthinking that never properly settles. For others, it can feel sudden, overwhelming and difficult to control. Whatever form it takes, anxiety can begin to affect how you think, feel and experience everyday life.
I have experience working with people struggling with anxiety, stress and overthinking, both on their own and alongside difficulties such as low mood, self-esteem issues, relationship struggles or feeling stuck in life. Often anxiety is not just about worry itself, but about the pressure, uncertainty or emotional strain sitting underneath it.
My counselling practice is based in Brighton & Hove, close to Preston Park station, and I offer a calm, confidential space where you can slow things down and talk openly about what is going on. If you would like to find out more, you are welcome to get in touch or arrange a free 15-minute call to see whether counselling feels right for you.
Over time, anxiety can begin to affect how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we experience meaning in our lives.
Through my work with anxiety, I have supported people with a range of difficulties that are often closely connected to it, including:

Hello. I’m John, a humanistic counsellor based in Brighton, specialising in working with anxiety. I offer a calm, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what is going on for you.
I do not see anxiety as something that simply needs to be removed or pushed away. Anxiety is a natural human response to our experiences, relationships and environment, even when it starts to feel overwhelming or difficult to manage. Often it is responding to something important, even if that is not immediately clear.
Through counselling, we can slow things down and begin to understand what your anxiety may be reacting to beneath the surface. With greater understanding often comes a different relationship with anxiety itself – one where it feels less overpowering and more manageable.
You do not need to arrive with the right words or a clear goal before starting. Many people come to counselling simply knowing that something does not feel right. That is enough to begin.
I work with adults (18+) experiencing anxiety, often alongside other emotional and psychological difficulties, including:
Anxiety can feel overwhelming, unsettling or difficult to understand.
Rather than seeing it as something that simply needs to be controlled, counselling can help us understand what anxiety may be responding to underneath the surface. Together, we explore your experience at a pace that feels manageable, helping anxiety feel less overwhelming over time.
Low mood and depression can leave you feeling emotionally flat, disconnected or lacking motivation.
Counselling can help us understand what may be contributing to these feelings underneath the surface. Together, we explore your experience at a pace that feels manageable.
Stress and overthinking can leave your mind feeling constantly busy, making it difficult to properly switch off or relax.
Counselling can help us slow things down and understand what may be driving these patterns underneath the surface. Helping things feel less overwhelming over time.
Low self-esteem and lack of confidence can affect how you see yourself, your relationships and the choices you make.
Counselling can help us understand where these feelings may have developed from and how they continue to affect you now. Together, we explore your experience at a pace that feels manageable.
You do not need to have everything figured out before starting. Counselling offers a calm space to slow things down and talk openly about what is going on.
